The Elder Scrolls Anthology mettete una X sul calendario!

The Elder Scroll Anthology Banner

Cosa ci sarà in cotanta magnificenza? Andiamo a vedere:

The Elder Scroll Anthology Text 1

Intel planning three more mobile ULV CPUs

Currently Intel has three ULV mobile processors in its line-up, but it looks like that will soon be expanded by an additional three model. Were talking about 17W TDP mobile Sandy Bridge chips here and very possibly the ones that will appear in Apples upcoming MacBook Air refresh. The new models are said to include one Core i5 and two Core i7 models.

Intels current models are the 1.4GHz Core i5-2537M, the 1.5GHz Core i7-2617M and the 1.6GHz Core i7-2657M. The Core i5 differs by having 3MB of L3 cache versus 4MB for the Core i7s and it also has a slightly reduced set of Turbo multipliers. However, Intels new models are upping the game a bit, especially the new Core i5 model.

Were looking at a base clock of 1.7GHz for the Core i5-2557M which is a massive step up in this market space and on top of that Intel has given it near enough the same Turbo multiplier as its Core i7 sibling. Oddly enough Intel decided to clock the Core i7-2637M at the exact same 1.7GHz as the Core i5-2557M, although the Turbo speed for a single core is 100MHz faster at 2.8GHz and it does of course have 1MB of extra L3 cache, just like the currently available model. What we dont quite understand is why the Core i7-2637 has a lower model number than the Core i7-2657M, as the CPU is faster both at base clock and at its fastest Turbo speed.

Finally we have the Core i7-2677 which is a 1.8GHz part with a Turbo frequency of 2.9GHz and its the fastest ULV Sandy Bridge CPU for the time being. All three models have the same base graphics clock as the current models at 350MHz, but the max dynamic frequency is much higher on all three models at 1.2GHz, compared to speeds between 900MHz and 1GHz. No word on pricing as yet, but we have a feeling that it wont be too long before we see some new ultra-thin notebooks with these CPUs fitted to them.

Samsung accuses LG of OLED technology theft

Samsung is under attack from Apple on all fronts globally, but in South Korea Samsung is attacking competing firm LG. LG and 11 other people have been accused of stealing Samsung’s OLED technology between 2010 and 2011.

Three of the accused currently work at Samsung. LG is denying that neither it nor its employees are involved in the technology theft. Samsung is also tagging on the accusation that LG has been poaching Samsung’s employees.

LG and Samsung are both prominent display makers, and their products are shipped worldwide. OLED technology allows manufacturers to produce thinner, lighter, and even flexible displays.

The two South Korean tech giants are currently vying to become the world’s largest suppliers of OLED displays.

Samsung names flexible AMOLED display YOUM, and may soon come to market

Samsung has officially named their flexible AMOLED technology "Youm", and both the name and logo has been sent for trademark registration in the United States. This may mean that devices incorporating Youm could soon go on retail. Youm is Samsungs next generation ultra-thin screen with the unique characteristic of being able to be bent; the company termed it as unbreakable.

The flexibile AMOLED technology was showcased at CES last year, and at that time, we saw a 4.5-inch screen with a thinness of 0.3mm and resolution of 800x480 (WVGA). Samsung has demonstrated the concept by using it for ebook reading, camera, video chat and even to the extend of augmented reality and 3D visuals on tablet PCs. Recently, many companies are conducting research and development on flexible displays, and LG was the first to go into production of the screen. Last week, Korean company CE has revealed that the company has begun mass production of the worlds first plastic electronic paper display.

Plextor announces PC free DVD burner

When it comes to backing up data, most of us arent doing nearly as good job as we should and these days we have so many different devices that needs to be backed up that most of us just dont bother. Plextor has come up with a somewhat interesting solution to the problem of backing up files on smartphones, tablets, digital cameras and just about anything else, without the need of a PC, namely the PlexEasy PC free DVD burner.

The Plexeasy is in essence a laptop size optical drive with a couple of USB ports, an SD card slot, an LCD display and a couple of buttons. What it allows you to do is to connect up all your gadgets to it and back up the data directly from the device and/or memory card. Plextor claims that the PlexEasy is compatible with most digital cameras as well as Android, iOS and Blackberry devices, but the press release doesnt mention Windows Phone or other mobile operating systems, but theyre most likely going to be supported. However, theres a catch, the PlexEasy only works with mass storage devices, so if you dont have a mass storage setting on your phone, its not going to work.

As an added bonus the PlexEasy can be used as an optical drive for your notebook, although it apparently requires two USB port for power which might not be ideal when it comes to Ultrabooks which tend to have one USB port on each side of the notebook. Were not sure DVD media is the way forward for backing up data though, as even your average SD card these days is about 8GB and most higher-end phones comes with at least as much internal storage memory making the not so old silver disc feel quite dated with its 4.7GB. However, as an easy way to archive photos directly from a camera or a phone/tablet it might not be such a bad solution. One critical piece of information is missing though, price and knowing Plextor its not going to be cheap.

Piracy charges against 9-year-old girl dropped

Police in Finland have dropped a piracy case against a 9-year-old girl after she attempted to download songs from Finnish pop star Chisu.

Once the illegal download was detected the Copyright Information and Control Centre (CIAPC) issued a letter to the girls father, who was the internet account holder, demanding a payment of €600 in compensation, as well as requiring the signing of a non-disclosure agreement. The father refused to pay, claiming that neither he nor his daughter really knew what she was doing, and that the songs ended up not even playing. The CIAPC responded by filing a complaint to the police, who raided the girls home and confiscated her laptop.Tools of the trade for digital criminalsNews of the raid spread online, earning the CIAPC much condemnation, but now the charges have been dropped.“We have decided to end the criminal investigation, because CIAPC has waived the penalty claims,” police officer Markku Nisula told Finnish news outlet MTV3.It appears that CIAPC and the girls father reached a settlement for the payment of €300, half the original amount.Presumably the infamous flagship of piracy worldwide, the girls Winnie the Pooh laptop, will now be returned to her.Source: MTV3

E-readers, tablet computers set to take off BCG survey

Consumers worlwide are very interested in tablet computers like Apple's iPad and electronic readers such as Amazon's Kindle, and sales of the devices could take off when prices drop, according to a new survey.

"I think we're already at the starting point of mass adoption," said John Rose of The Boston Consulting Group, which conducted the survey of nearly 13,000 consumers in 14 countries.

"A million iPads in a month is a lot," Rose told AFP on Monday, refering to Apple's first month sales figures for the touchscreen device. Other companies such as Sony, Samsung and

The survey revealed prices will have to drop before e-readers and tablets become established consumer products alongside television sets, personal computers and mobile phones.

"As with other major mass market consumer devices the prices will come down," Rose told AFP. "They always do.

"I expect you'll see the prices come down in the next 12 to 18 months," he said. "The first iPod was a 400-dollar device so there's no reason why we won't see the same cycle."

US consumers said they were prepared to pay between 100 and 150 dollars for a single-usage device like the Kindle or 130 to 200 dollars for a multi-purpose device like the

In the United States, consumers are willing to pay between five and 10 dollars for digital books, five to 10 dollars for a monthly newspaper subscription and between two and four dollars for a single issue of an online magazine.

The BCG survey was conducted in March of 12,717 consumers in Australia, Austria, Britain, China, Finland, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Norway, South Korea, Spain and the United States.

GPS phones to streamline, add content

By 2007, cellular customers in the United States and Europe will be able to use their phones to get to the nearest restaurant, find out if it's open and see the daily specials, according to a company that programs global positioning platforms for mobile phones.

"The United States will be a big navigation market," the sales director of Herzliya, Israel-based Telmap, Ziv Orr, told United Press International in a telephone interview.

He said there are already "tens, hundreds" of handset models there equipped with Assisted GPS, a technology that uses an assistance server to cut down the time needed to determine a location.

In Europe, by comparison, "the GPS-embedded process is slower," Orr said, with only five models currently equipped with A-GPS.

The bottom line is that in the near future, GPS will go the way of the camera and become a standard feature for phones in the medium price range and higher, Orr said.

Telmap already has GPS platform supply deals with three Israeli mobile providers, MIRS, Pelephone and Cellcom, and boasts 70,000 users, according to Orr.

The deal with Pelephone, announced two weeks ago, was signed with the United States in mind, Orr said, because like 50 percent of the American market, Pelephone operates on a Code Division Multiple Access system.

"We wanted to prepare with a client that uses CDMA," Orr said. The technology allows every cellular channel to use the full spectrum available, unlike GSM's Time Division Multiple Access technology, which assigns each channel a specific frequency.

The Pelephone deal also allows the company, whose platform is Java-based, to use BREW and Windows Mobile applications.

Israelis with GPS capabilities use their telephone's navigation feature, where voices and maps direct him to a destination, an average of 13 times per month, he added.

"I don't know of any (other cell phone) application that is used so much," Orr said.

Besides the navigation feature, users can look at maps and execute address and point-of-interest searches, Orr said. Telmap's platform also serves as a channel for customers to download other content features like traffic-report cameras for an extra fee.

"Content is king," Orr said. "It's a way to keep customers and attract new customers."

Telmap's GPS information and maps are "off-board," meaning the user downloads them as needed and that the company updates them every three months, Orr said. "On-board" devices don't require a download every time the customer uses the system but are time-consuming and costly to update, he added.

But the real question about a phone embedded with GPS technology is what happens when someone calls. Do you have to pull over? Will the voice telling you to turn right interrupt your conversation?

"When I drive, several things can happen: there could be an incoming call; I could make a mistake; I could encounter a 'black hole' without coverage," Orr explained.

He said that other GPS platforms only download the calculated route at the beginning of the trip. If a call comes in, the GPS stops, and it takes time, costs money and is annoying to recalculate the route, he said.

"This is unacceptable," Orr said, emphasizing that the technology has to be user-friendly.

As a result, Telmap's application downloads a "fish bone" -- the best route along with all the other roads around it, in a 600-meter radius. This way, "I can talk; I can make a mistake ... it's not dependent on the network" and doesn't need to be re-downloaded if something interrupts the chosen route, Orr said.

This system, called Mobile Optimized Navigation Data, or MOND, is unique to the company, Orr said.

Several U.S. cell-phone carriers already offer Location-Based Services, or LBS: Sprint, Verizon and Disney Mobile have or are developing "family finder" technology that allows parents to locate their kids' cell phones without calling them. Verizon and Sprint also offer more traditional GPS navigation services.

Another Israeli company, 3DVU, is using a Google Earth-like model for navigation. The company, which already provides a similar service to some Japanese cars, presented its cellular technology at February's 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

Reviews of the 3DVU's car navigation systems have been mixed. While Michael Rogers wrote in Newsweek in 2003 that 3DVU's technology was an exciting "hint of the future," Rafe Needleman wrote in Red Herring in 2001 that he'd rather have "the richness of a good (traditional) map, the exclusion of datanoise, and the art of fitting that information into a single image."

"On the other hand," he wrote, echoing proponents of GPS, "when I'm lost, I just want directions."

Dell Introduces New XPS Laptops in Singapore

At yesterday'sevent, Dell showcased thenew Dell XPS laptops which claim to incorporate JBL and Waves sound design, and high-definition Nvidia graphics to provide the cinematic experience to consumers. The latops are also 3D TV ready and include Nvidia's 3DTV Play software that allows you to hook up to your 3D TV and play your PC or movies in stereoscopic 3D.

Offered in 14- and 15-inch screen sizes, the XPS machines are also Skype-certified with HD video streaming webcams so that you can do video calls with friends and family easily. According to Dell, the XPS 14 and XPS 1 are available now (from http://www.dell.com.sg/) and the starting prices for both are S$1,499.

Besides the XPS 14 and 15 laptops, Dell also showcased their some of their other products including the 5-inch Dell Streak Android tablet and Dell Venue Pro Windows Phone 7.

Quick hands-onof Dell Streak

The Dell Streak is the company's first Android tabletwith a 5-inch display. While it is smaller than the iPad, we have no problem reading the text and the size feels about just right in our hands. According to a Dell executive, the Streak will appeal more to the ladies as it is smaller and lighter compared to other Internet tablets or ebook readers.

The Streak also offers a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash. At the top are the 3.5mm audio jack, volume/zoom control and the camera button. When you want to take a picture with the tablet, you hold it exactly like how you would with a touchscreen phone, in a landscape orientation.

On the right is a unique connector that fits to the power adapter, USB cable or docking station. The Streak when its available here could be Android 1.6, but is upgradeable to 2.1. No pricing and availability information available yet though.

Quick hands-on of Dell Venue Pro

The Dell Venue Pro was one of the Windows Phone 7 when Microsoft announced their highly anticipated mobile platform, but it was only available in US. And it seems like the company could be bringing the phone to Asia after all.

The Venue Pro has a intuitive 4.1-inch touchscreen with a layer of toughened Gorilla glass to give the brilliance and durability, although it also offers a QWERTY keypad. But unlike most of the QWERTY phones that slide from the side, this one slide out from the bottom. The keys are pretty small to type on, though there is always theoption of using the onscreen keyboard.

The power button and 3.5mm jack are at the top, while the volume control are on the right. At the rear is the 5-megapixel camera with flash for taking pictures and videos.

No word as to when the Dell Streak or Venue Pro Windows Phone 7 will be available in Singapore yet, or their pricing. But they are definitely coming.

National Provides Security for Notebooks With Its SafeKeeper Trusted I O Device

IBM Is First Manufacturer to Equip Notebooks With National’s Trusted Platform Module

National Semiconductor announced today that IBM selected National’s SafeKeeper Notebook Trusted Input/Output security device for IBM’s latest notebook computer, the IBM ThinkPad T43.
Announced January 19, IBM’s thin and light ThinkPad T43 features a multi-layered security approach for managing ever-increasing security threats. National’s SafeKeeper Notebook Trusted Input/Output (I/O) device, based on the industry-standard Trusted Platform Module, provides the foundation for this layered secure computing infrastructure and helps IBM’s customers protect their notebooks from hackers and Trojan horse viruses. The Trusted I/O device stores vital elements of the computer’s identity in silicon, making it virtually impossible for outsiders to read or modify that information.

“National and IBM recognize that intellectual property must be protected on notebooks no matter where a company’s employees are located,” said Jonathan Levy, general manager of National’s Advanced PC Division. “With IBM’s desktop PCs already relying on National’s SafeKeeper technology, their customers can be assured that they have secure industry-standard products whether they are in the office or on-the-go.”

Unlike other security hardware, National’s Trusted I/O devices integrate a Trusted Platform Module (TPM), Super I/O and embedded firmware to implement industry-standard Trusted Computing Group security functions. TPMs are microcontrollers that securely store passwords, digital certificates and encryption keys for PCs and other systems. These devices, which comply with Trusted Computing Group (TCG) specifications, can be used to protect computer software, such as BIOS, operating systems and applications, from unauthorized snoopers or malicious attacks. IBM has used TPMs since 1999.

National’s Notebook Trusted I/O security device is based on its embedded 16-bit CompactRISC core technology. It resides on the low-pin-count (LPC) bus, an ideal place for integration because it sits at the intersection of input devices to the PC. Pin- and software-compatibility with the company’s current Super I/O products allows system engineers to easily create dual-system designs that can accept either part. This gives manufacturers the flexibility to design “TPM-ready” systems without designing in an additional empty socket.

Motorola unveils home telecom hub device

Motorola Tuesday unveiled a new access device that serves as a hub for wireless and standard telephones used in the home.

The Residential Seamless Mobility Gateway includes a wireless access point, router and Voice over Internet Protocol adapter that will host standard phones, Internet access and a hot spot for cell phones.

The result will be, among other things, improved ability to use a single number for both landline and cell phones. The RSG will automatically route an incoming call to the appropriate phone, which will help users conserve their monthly wireless minutes allotments.

"The product eliminates the hassle of finding a good reception zone in the home, and of managing separate bills and individual calling plans," Motorola summed up in a release. "Consumers can simply dial a number, and the intelligence in the gateway will automatically route the call to the best available network or service option."

The RSG product line was introduced in the run-up to the big Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas later this week.
